The Formation of the Dataset Providers Alliance
Seven content-licensing sellers have formed the sector’s first trade group. This includes music, image, video, and other datasets for training artificial intelligence systems.
The Dataset Providers Alliance (DPA) advocates for ethical data sourcing. They focus on rights for people depicted in datasets and protection of content owners’ intellectual property.
Addressing Copyright and Ethical Concerns
The rise of generative AI technologies has led to backlash from content creators. This backlash has manifested in copyright lawsuits against companies like Google, Meta, and OpenAI.
Tech companies train models with vast quantities of online content, often without consent. They claim the usage is legal but also secretly pay for access to private content collections.
The Demand for Licensed Data
The potential for increased demand for licensed data has driven the emergence of a new industry. This industry packages content and sells it for AI system training.
Groups such as Fairly Trained have been formed to ensure ethical standards. DPA targets transaction content, ensuring members only sell ethically sourced data.
Advocacy and Legislation Efforts
DPA aims to push for legislation like the NO FAKES Act. This U.S. bill seeks to create penalties for unauthorized digital replicas of people’s voices or likenesses.
The group emphasizes the need for transparency in training data, similar to the European Union’s AI Act. They also support the U.S. Generative AI Copyright Disclosure Act.
DPA plans to publish a white paper outlining their positions in July.
