Science writer and science fiction author Charles Q. Choi offers, in a longish piece at the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers’ online magazine, Spectrum, talking about the real world where “Neural networks can be disastrously brittle, forgetful, and surprisingly bad at math.” AI frequently flubs and it is not clear how to make it flub less. Here are brief notes on three examples of the seven he offers:

The Social Impact That Deepfake Porn Has On Its Victims

Deepfake technology lets people create content where the face of a person superimposes on the other person’s body for realistic-looking fake visuals. Recently, cybersecurity company Deeptrance, revealed that 15,000 deepfake videos were uploaded daily. 96% were clear pornography in which online predators morphed celeb faces onto the adult entertainers. It is not just limited to celeb porn, social predators make deepfakes videos of ordinary people also for pure revenge. In developed nations, the USA, the Deepfake Accountability Act 2019 was passed before the 2020 elections to make revenge law effective.

How AI Enables Sophisticated Deepfake Content Detection

A combination of “deep learning” and “fake media” a deepfake is manipulated video content that is nearly indistinguishable from authentic video. Deepfake creators often target celebrities, world leaders, and politicians, manipulating the video to portray the subject saying something they did not. nefarious actors are capitalizing on the dark side of deepfakes, using the same techniques to disseminate pornography, conduct misinformation campaigns, commit securities fraud, and obstruct justice. Microsoft, Facebook, and Amazon launched the Deepfake Detection Challenge to motivate development of automated tools for identifying counterfeit content.
