COBOL has been around for over sixty years. Despite concerted efforts to migrate more and more COBOL programs to modern languages, it shows no sign of disappearing any time soon. There is still a lot of COBOL running — close to 1/4 trillion lines of it by one recent estimate. Is there a way that we could speed up moving this huge body of code from the era of punch cards into the 21st century?

Back when GPT-3 came out in 2020, I made a half-hearted attempt to get it to translate COBOL to Python, but I didn’t get any useful results.… Read more...
