China’s Leap in GenAI Patents
A recent United Nations report by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) reveals China leads the world in Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) patents.
Between 2014 and 2023, China filed over 38,000 GenAI patents, six times more than the United States.
GenAI’s Explosive Growth and Applications
GenAI, poised to revolutionize many sectors, has seen remarkable growth. Over 50,000 GenAI patents were filed globally in the last decade, a quarter in 2023 alone.
Image and video data lead with 17,996 patents. Text-based applications follow with 13,494, while speech and music account for 13,480 patents.
China’s Strategic Focus
China’s massive patent filings underscore its strategic emphasis on AI development. Companies like Tencent, Ping An, and Baidu dominate, along with academic institutions like the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
IBM is notable as the only non-Chinese entity among the top applicants, with 601 inventions.
Potential Impact on Global Economy
Current GenAI applications like chatbots enhance customer service. Transformative future applications include scientific research, drug development, publishing, transportation, and security.
"GenAI can transform how we work, live, and play," said WIPO Director General Daren Tang.
